 S y l l a b u s

This course is offered within the context of the Middle School Mathematics project in the Wichita Public Schools. 

Course Outcomes:

The participants will-

  1. Engage in interactive staff development
  2. Reinforce mathematics content knowledge
  3. Implement NCTM and Kansas mathematics teaching standards
  4. Become knowledgeable of  research and best practice based teaching strategies
  5. Practice research and best practice based teaching strategies
  6. Make connections with mathematics teachers within their building and within the USD 259 school district
  7. Develop attitudes that empower them to make a difference for ALL students.

Grading

This course will be graded A-F based on the quality of work and following evidence.

  1. Attendance and participation at all sessions of the training. (If exceptions must be made, these should be arranged prior to the session.)
  2. Reflective journal of how your mathematics teaching is progressing (changing), and how your students respond to these changes. Include reflection around the following questions:
    • How are you  differentiating instruction in your classroom? 
    • What concerns you most in your teaching and learning of mathematics?
    • What concerns you most in your students learning of mathematics?
  3. Submission of four of the following pieces of evidence related to the course outcomes:
  1. Samples of new math activities and lesson. Include reflections on students' responses to the lesson. One from each session.
  2. Personal list of math-related resources consulted. Include your evaluative statement (caption) of the resource. (These may include printed material beyond the textbook, Internet sources, personal consulting with other staff, etc.)
  3. Notes on the NCTM Standards covered in the training and reflections on their potential influences on your teaching.
  4. Outlines of math leadership activities such as conference presentations, Family Math Nights, etc.
  5. Other evidences of good teaching practices as approved by the course instructor.
