Course Purpose/Catalog Description:

To assist preservice and inservice teachers in effectively integrating appropriate computer technology into the mathematics curriculum. This will be accomplished through exploring and evaluating mathematics software, web resources, instructional strategies and authentic assessment supported by national mathematics and technology standards.

The objective of the course is for the teacher to become familiar with the uses of technological tools in mathematics education. Teachers will have an opportunity to explore appropriate software and develop instructional materials that integrate technology. Focus is on the integration of software programs designed for the mathematics classroom. Explore software and instructional activities which support mathematics education and integration of mathematics and technology. Enables classroom teachers to utilize computers and related technology in the mathematics curriculum.

PREREQUISITES: At least one college-level course in basic computer skills or instructor’s consent.

TEXTBOOKS AND RELATED MATERIALS: MicroWorld (logo), Geometer Sketchpad, Maple

MAJOR TOPICS:

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Assessment

Students will demonstrate ability to select and adapt software for use in mathematics education and integration into a mathematics curriculum.

Presentations - Peer teaching; Term Project

Use computers to facilitate learning mathematics based on national mathematics and technology standards

Action Plan/Term Project; Inspiration, Micro World, Spread sheets, Geometer's sketchpad...

Students will demonstrate ability to adapt specific software for use in the problem-based learning in mathematics education.

Activities; Action Plan/Term Project;

Using technology students will design mathematical models which represent practical problems.

Assignments - using spread sheet

Students will select a problem and incorporate problem-based learning into an instructional unit integrating mathematics and computer technology.

Technology portfolio; Internet exploration and online research

Demonstrate a knowledge of the functions and limitations of a computer system and software

Guided and independent classroom work - demonstrations

GUIDING QUESTIONS (We will assume that this coming fall you will have available all the technology you would like to have. I know that this might be an unrealistic expectation for some of you, but as teachers, we do need to think about the future and look for ways in which we can advance both our learning and learning for our students.)

  1. How are technology-based representations of mathematical concepts different from standard representations? Explain in details an example appropriate for the level you are teaching (or will be teaching).

  2. What do you think is the influence of technology-based representations on YOUR

    • conceptual understanding of specific mathematical ideas, and

    • on the development of your mathematics related pedagogical content knowledge?

  3. What criteria are you as a teacher going to use to balance between technology-based and "other" representations?

TERM PROJECT:

  1. Select focus from the course topics and incorporate learning into an instructional unit integrating computer technology, OR

  2. Design and begin implementation of an action plan to integrate computer technology into the mathematics curriculum

  3. Share (a) focus or plan (June 11) and (b) final product (June 24, 25, 26) with classmates using computer technology. Submit as part of your Technology Portfolio (June 27).

  4. Your term projects will be posted on the web site within Web pages for this course.

Academic Honesty Statement: Academic honesty is essential for any community of scholars. All graded student work must be that student's original work. If the instructor becomes convinced by either the student's actions or by the work itself that it is not original, the instructor may take action as severe as recording a grade of F, explaining why the action was taken.

Special Needs: If you have a physical, psychiatric/emotional, medical, or learning disability that may impact on your ability to carry out assigned course work, I would encourage you to contact the Office of Disability Services (DS). The office is located in Grace Wilkie Annex room 173. (Voice phone number is 978-3309; tty phone number is 978-3067). DS will review your concerns and determine, with you, what accommodations are necessary and appropriate for you. All information and documentation of your disability is confidential and will not be released by DS without your written permission.
