CI 402  FALL 2003

FINAL EXAM

DUE by Thursday May 13 at 10:00 am

The following is a section of the syllabus that should guide you in completing your final exam.  Read carefully all the questions, think about them and reflect on what you have learned during this semester. Than complete the final exam tasks.

“The preservice teacher will develop and continuously refine instructional experiences in science and mathematics. In the process of developing and formulating their own philosophy of teaching mathematics and science they will be guided by the following questions:

How do students learn mathematics and science?
1. What is the teacher's role? What is the student's role? How do these roles fit current ideas of how students learn?
2. What are obstacles to teaching in a way that reflects how students learn? What are methods to address these obstacles?

How do we construct a teaching practice to reflect the way students learn?
3. Where do you see your teaching in the continuum of teaching methodologies? Explain.
 Expository (Direct)--------Guided Inquiry-----------Free Discovery
4. How will multiple diverse perspectives enhance the teaching of mathematics and science in your classroom?
5. How will you use the textbook and worksheets in a way that reflects how students learn?
6. Given unlimited resources how would you incorporate technology into teaching mathematics and science?
7. How will you know when students have achieved the outcomes/standards?"

Final exam tasks:

Task 1: Click on METAPHOR  and follow the prescribed steps. In fields a, b, and c, support your metaphor based on your reflection about your philosophy of teaching mathematics and science(Suggestion: To avoid loosing your work, have a Word file with your answers ready before attempting to input your data online.)

Task 2: Describe briefly one error pattern that you discovered while pre-student teaching. It can be one that you used for your PTWS. How is studying that error pattern and instructional decision making around that challenge helping you improve your pedagogical content knowledge.

Task3: Develop a concept map that will describe how you visualize your understanding of pedagogical content knowledge (Use Word or Inspiration).

Task 1 you will do online. Please e-mail Tasks 2 and 3 as attachments.

April 29

 Plan for the next week

Tuesday Morning – work in groups

  • GOAL: By the end of the morning you should have a completed narrative form of all seven sections of the PTWS that you can refine and finalize by the May 6

  • Look at contextual factors narrative handout – that is your model for every section

  • The bold-face prompts (on your PTWS section outlines) can be your sub-headings

  • Make sure to answer the questions – That is more important than number of pages

Tuesday Afternoon – grade level groupings

  Thursday

  • Order of presentations: We will begin with those placed in Kindergarten and go in order until those placed in 5th grade

  • Class discussion after every grade level presentations

What should you bring to class on Tuesday, May 4:

  1. BRING A LAP TOP IF YOU HAVE ONE

  2. Your complete pre-student teaching notebook.

  3. PTWS outlines with your notes in each of the sections

  4. WSU PTWS handout that describes the requirements of the work sample and the prompts.

  5. A disk or a pen-drive (if needed) if you use one of the college’s laptops.

What is due on Thursday, May 6:

    • Completed pre-student notebook

    • PTWS narrative (paper and electronic)

    • Mathematics unit (paper and electronic)

    • Presentation (electronic)

Remember to focus on error patterns

ERROR PATTERNS: Reflect on children’s mathematics mistakes (preconceptions, errors).

Focus your presentation on

  1. your students’ mistakes relative to the topic you addressed in your three lesson math unit (or other math lessons that either you or your cooperating teacher are doing),
  2. your cooperating teachers’ suggestions for ways to address these error patterns and
  3. your own ideas regarding these errors.

Wednesday, April 7

            Reflection #9: Metaphor

What is a metaphor? How can a teacher’s metaphor help him/her become a better teacher?

Friday, April 2

Math unit and science centers that you did are posted at http://www.education.wichita.edu/alagic/402_spring_04/assignments.htm. Please have a look. If your part is missing or needs to be corrected, let me know.

Your next reflective question (Blackboard: reflective pods) will be posted on Wednesday next week with a due date April 16.

Enjoy teaching and let me know if I can help you in any way. Keep your notebooks up-to-date.

Don’t forget to work or at least brainstorm about various sections of PTWS.

Four more weeks!

Saturday

March 9

The following reflection will be posted on the Blackboard tomorrow:

Diversity has become a particularly relevant topic in  education as new emphasis is placed on reaching ALL children. As you teach mathematics and science, what approaches might be helpful in dealing with a diversity of

(a)  cultures and languages among your students? (You may wish to consider the recommendations for inquiry and communication found in the National Science Education Standards.)

(b) developmental levels among your students? (Remember that children with special education needs often go to resource rooms for reading and mathematics, but they are mainstreamed for science.)

Please have a look at self-evaluation assignments. I have added couple of things. I will also send it to you via e-mail, to make sure that you have it available while preparing your self-evaluation #2. You can click on spreadsheet to get a template for your grades.

02/14/04

Due to challenging schedules some reflective pods are faced  with a time crunch in posting reflections and the follow-up summary in a required order. To accommodate for that, RULES FOR SUBMITTING REFLECTIONS are adapted, as follows:

For full number of points your weekly reflection has to be posted before Wednesday midnight. That way, a person that is summarizing reflections will have enough time to do a GOOD job of summarizing your reflections and posting high-quality summary before Friday midnight.

I do understand how busy all of you are and  I will try to post reflective questions earlier, Saturday at latest. I hope these changes will help. Let me know if you have other suggestions.

Just to remind you, a reflection is worth full number of points ONLY if it is at least a  full paragraph (at least five sentences) providing good evidence to support (or challenge) the statement in discussion.

Reflection #4: Browse through your notes about Let's Try Action Research or re-read the article. Reflect on challenges and opportunities provided through TICKLE assignments. How is the TICKLE assignment going to benefit YOUR classroom teaching skills?  What are YOU learning in the process of implementation and analysis? Discuss at least two possible aspects.

  • Reflection #3: Questioning
Why do effective teachers answer questions with questions? What do YOU think about that strategy? What are some successful questioning strategies? Provide supporting evidence for your statement from other resources; include references.
