Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction

Wichita State University announces one of its sites for the site-based M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. The classes will be held in a mixed delivery mode: face-to-face and online. Face-to face will be held approximately every other Monday evening 5:30-8:30 pm for two years beginning fall 2008.

The Masters of Education in C&I is  a 36 credit hour program designed to familiarize students with knowledge, issues and trends in curriculum and instruction and to demonstrate the effective use of the following in meeting the program goals:

·          Communicating effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and the public

·          Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data

·          Making informed decisions

·          Solving problems constructively

·          Integrating technology effectively

·          Working creatively and effectively to nurture diversity and resolve diversity issues, and

·          Striving to continually improve instruction and lifelong learning skills

 The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction requires 24 core hours and an area of emphasis. The area of emphasis, 12 hours of coursework, is determined by the student and approved by a faculty advisor and may lead to an additional endorsement or a graduate certificate. Significant portion of the work can be completed through online work.

 

The Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction is designed to develop dynamic and reflective educational practitioners capable of monitoring and improving their own practice, and to develop informed teacher-leaders who can apply practical knowledge, educational theory, and research to the solutions of problems in curriculum and instruction. The program (a) promotes informed reflective inquiry into curriculum and instruction, (b) develops practical skills and leadership through active engagement in the study and improvement of educational practice, and (c) develops each student's professional and subject-matter expertise through graduate courses in a focused area of expertise.

Admission is processed through the WSU Graduate School and may be completed online. Admission criteria include requirements of both the WSU Graduate School and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education. They are

–      A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.

–      GPA requirements as follows:

1.     Graduation from the WSU teacher education program with a GPA of 2.75 or higher in the last 60 hours OR

2.     Graduation from an NCATE accredited program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 hours OR

3.     Minimum score of 917 on any two of the subtests of the Graduate Record Exam or a minimum score of 40 on the Miller Analogies Test OR

4.     Providing alternative evidence that documents academic aptitude.

–      Evidence of involvement in curriculum development or teaching.

These course guides students in formulating questions and using appropriate research principles to collect, analyze, interpret, and report data in order to evaluate the effectiveness of classroom instruction and educational policies and/or practices. Sustained exploration of topics from CI 731 expected.

Extending Collaborative Inquiry beyond the Classroom

This course guides students in (a) extending collaborative inquiry beyond the classroom to investigate educational practice(s) at the building and/or district level and (b) communicating their investigation(s) and outcomes to other professionals. Students will engage in professional dialogue and collaboration regarding curriculum and instruction. Sustained exploration of topics from CI 731 & 804 expected.

This course emphasizes commitment to and application of professional leadership in curriculum and instruction and/or school improvement. Sustained exploration of topics from CI 731, 804 & 837 expected.
